On Joe Rogan’s podcast Tuesday, Aug. 6, presidential hopeful Senator Bernie Sanders vowed, if elected, to remove cannabis from the FDA’ Schedule I banned substances list, effectively legalizing marijuana.
Sanders said that the status of cannabis, currently at the same level of “killing drug” heroin, is unjust.
“What I called for then and what I call for now is the legalization of marijuana in America.” Sanders told Rogan. “As President of the United States of America I believe we can do that through Executive Order.”
Rogan asked the Senator about the current opioid epidemic.
Sanders cited the fact that this is the first time in history of life expectancy on the decline, in part due to suicide, and “turning to drugs and alcohol.”
The Senator called these ‘diseases of despair’ in oppressed communities. He went on to demand changes to the criminal justice system.
“I think ultimately we have got to legalize marijuana, and what’s good news is some communities, some cities, are expunging the records. So if you were arrested [and] have a criminal record for selling marijuana, that is being expunged. And that is the right thing to do,” Sanders told Rogan.
