A new Gallup poll released Tuesday shows that two out of every three Americans (66 percent) now favors legalizing cannabis for adult use — the highest results in favor of the idea in the research firm’s history. The numbers of those in favor of legalization didn’t start looking up until the year 2000, with majority support emerging in 2013.
Supporters span a wide spectrum of political, regional, age and gender groups.
The poll was conducted from Oct. 1 to 10 — before Canada’s legalization on Wednesday. Gallup also found last year that 53 percent of Republicans now support legalization. Canadian retail shops reportedly ran out of weed less than four days after legalization.
